Retainers
Upon completion of active tooth movement, the teeth are held in place with retainers. Retainers can be either fixed (a wire bonded behind the teeth) or removable. The doctors will recommend the type of retainer that is best for you. The period of full-time retention generally lasts 6-12 months, after which time the retainers are worn at night only. Since teeth continue to move throughout our lives, we recommend indefinite nighttime retention. The retainers are removed before brushing, and they should be brushed before placing them back in your mouth.
Retainers are also capable of correcting certain orthodontic problems by actively moving the teeth. The orthodontist will evaluate your teeth to determine if you are a candidate for retainer treatment.
